The Escarteen Sisters (ES)

In fjol Kaustby Folk Music Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary in style, but when the festival is held for the 51st time, the farten doesn't go up, not yet! The festival programme will be published in its entirety on Wednesday 16.5. and for once the programme is comprehensive. The same music festival will feature top names from the world of roots music as well as storfavoriter from Suvi Teräsniska till Egotrip, international stars from Haiti and Colombia, talrika ivriga spelmän inte att förglömma.

- From this impressive programme, I would like to highlight, for example, the Pelimannit framilla concert series, where you will be able to see more detailed portraits of some of the characters, says the programme director. Anne-Mari Hakamäki. Spelmännen både spelar och berättar vid dessa konserter.

Among those presented in the concert series Pelimannit framilla (Spelmän vid rampen) are the baroque violin experts Crete-Maria Kentala, who sits right in the middle of a spelman's mill in Kaustby and who, among other things, appeared at the London Proms in February.

Welcome to the debate

- Throughout the week, there are programmes for all ages, from morning to night, reports programme director Anne-Mari Hakamäki. Vi strävar efter att skapa tillräcklig variation i programmet men också dagshelheter med något slags röd tråd.

On Tuesday, the Knattematinéerna will be held, bringing together hundreds of participants, on Sunday, the focus will be on Finnish-Swedish music and dance, and on Thursday, local traditions from Kaustby will be presented. The weekend will be a pulsating programme with dj KillaBeatMaker from Colombia.

The programme also aims to engage - alongside all the concerts, there are also training sessions and workshops, for example to learn how to play the ukulele.

The popular jamworkshops will be held in Maunos magasin and anyone who wants to can join in.

- The idea is to emphasise especially the social side of dance: to present in practice what is important when you dance and how the relationship between music and dance functions, Hakamäki explains.

Every day there is a good programme for children: both concerts and engaging activities - Kaustby is certainly one of the most family-friendly summer festivals in Finland.

From natural products to rap

A part of the massive number of artists that were discovered at the Kaustby Folk Music Festival were published in the yearbook, but several artists have also been published since then, among them the intensive Chouk Bwa från Haiti, critically acclaimed blues-influenced avant-folk artists Richard Dawson from Storbritannien and skönsjungande The Escarteen Sisters from Spain.

Bland inhemska artister kan nämnas dragspelsvirtuosen Markku Lepistö, haapoja & illmari collective som kombinerar folkmusik och rap, schamanviolinisten Tuomas Rounakari and Teostoprisnominerade Meriheini Luoto, vars prisade helhete Metsänpeitto passar fint också i årets naturtema vid Kaustby folkmusikfestival. Timo Rautiainen is known as a heavy artist and a great folk music fan, and will be back in the year as a duo with mångsidiga Ville Ojanen. In Kaustby uppträder de ledande inhemska folkdansgrupperna från Siepak till Motora as well as international guests from Estonia, among others. The heart of the festival is made up of an impressive array of performers from all over Finland.

Kaustby 51st Folk Music Festival arrangeras 9.-15.7.2018.
