Original stories, experimental music and dance
Kaustinen Folk Music Festival's showcase bands are versatile
The Kaustinen Folk Music Festival showcase concert series will once again present three emerging names in folk music. The jury selected three representative performers from among the applicants, reflecting the different facets of folk music in a great way, also reaching across the Gulf of Finland to the West! Maria Reikko & Best Case Scenario Band guaranteed to make you dance, the Oulu-based Väisänen, etc. interprets its own stories in the form of music and Sweden becomes Trio Törn, which plays with a whole new combination of instruments.
Trio Törn: ”In a trio, the roles are not so bound”

Trio Törn brings a breath of Swedish folk music to Kaustinen. The young musicians are deeply rooted in tradition, but they are happy to stretch boundaries with their unique combination of instruments, which combine keyed violin, fiddle and cello. Their debut album was released this spring and the band will be touring extensively throughout the summer.
– The group is motivated by a desire to work experimentally, our instrumental combination is very original, says cellist Klara Källström, whose Duo Systrami band was seen in Kaustinen last year.
Trio Törn is first and foremost a meeting of three musical personalities.
– Our violinist Olof Kennemark comes from Västergötland, a key violinist Peter Dillner Uppland and they have played a lot of songs from their own regions. Personally, I have played classical music as well as folk music from Ångermanland. So we all come from slightly different backgrounds and are now focusing on creating something new, without forgetting our roots. For example, despite our experimental nature, we play a lot of dance gigs!
– Playing in a trio is a lot of fun and interesting because you can change tasks all the time. The roles are not so fixed, and no one is just an accompanist, for example. This way we can use the possibilities of the instruments to the full and discover new things all the time.
All three musicians studied at the same time at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, from which Olof Kennemark is a graduate. Does the surname Kennemark sound familiar? Yes, it's the name of the band member of Forsmark Tre and Nordik Tree. Hans Kennemarkin son, who continues the family's line of top violinists.
