Well,<br \/>\nI've felt like that since I arrived to Kaustinen in April for my<br \/>\ninternship at the Folk Music Institute-but this week I REALLY feel<br \/>\nthat way. The Kaustinen Folk Music Festival is in full swing this week<br \/>\nand I am living right in the middle of all the excitement. This year I<br \/>\nam having the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in Maunon<br \/>\nMakasiini, right next door to one of the main stages of the festival.<br \/>\nEvery morning this week I have woken up, lazily around mid-morning, and<br \/>\nbeen serenaded by some new, delightful surprise beginning at 11am or<br \/>\nnoon. I barely have to get out of bed to go to the festival!<\/p>\n<p>But there are other tempting acts to seek out and I haven't been<br \/>\nstaying in bed all day. I've caught quite a few! I've heard bands<br \/>\nfrom Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Haiti, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland and the<br \/>\nU.S. There is definitely an international presence! And though it is<br \/>\ntrue that is impossible to see everything (there are easily more than<br \/>\n100 acts a day), it is also impossible not to see a ton!<br \/>\nEverything is so close and walkable that before you realise it, you've<br \/>\nstopped to see yet another band before you finally break to have lunch.<br \/>\nI have noticed the Finns eating lunch around 2:30 or 3pm this week. And<br \/>\nthat's unheard of!!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37355\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37355\" class=\"wp-image-37355\" src=\"http:\/\/kaustinen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Festival-3-1000x750.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saana Kujala, Suzanne Wedeking and Sampsa Kujala.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Maybe the late lunch is the seemingly Southern European climate we are<br \/>\nexperiencing. This weather is making us all feel pretty lucky, I<br \/>\nsuppose. That is, unless you're stuck wearing a traditional outfit of<br \/>\nsome kind for a performance under a baking-hot tent. But I think we'd<br \/>\nall agree that 27 degrees (and that's 80 degrees Fahrenheit for those<br \/>\nof you wondering) and sunny every single day is definitely better than<br \/>\n10 degrees and raining! But people assure me over and over again that<br \/>\nTHIS IS NOT NORMAL. Well, it is certainly a good trick to get me to come<br \/>\nback next year. I'll order the same weather, please!<\/p>\n<p>An international presence is definitely here at the festival, both<br \/>\nperformers and guests alike. But what I feel beneath everything, the<br \/>\nroots of this festival, is Kaustinen. Beneath the noise and hubbub of<br \/>\nthe huge increase in population this week is the same Kaustinen I've<br \/>\nseen since April. Tips, families, Pelimanni, familiar faces, and<br \/>\nthe same traditional songs I've been hearing ever since I arrived. The<br \/>\nKaustinen music is there, supporting the festival like a strong but<br \/>\nindiscriminate pillar.
