The 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary theme is Feast and it's safe to look forward to a copious feast that draws from the celebration traditions in the Kaustinen region and also ties in with the celebration of Finland's 100<sup>th<\/sup> year of independence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34315\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34315\" class=\"wp-image-34315\" src=\"http:\/\/kaustinen.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Gajanas-1000x639.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"319\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Band of the Year, G\u00e1janas<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The band awarded Band of the Year in 2017 is a young, modern S\u00e1mi music group <strong>Gaianas <\/strong>from Inari in the very north of Finland. The band's music is a refreshing combination of musical fabric, improvisation and centuries-old <em>joiku <\/em>tradition. The lead figure of the band is Hilda L\u00e4nsman, a student in the University of Arts Sibelius Academy, who has followed her mother's footsteps as in preserving and cultivating S\u00e1mi musical tradition. Her mother, Ulla Pirttij\u00e4rvi, first became known from the band Angelin tyt\u00f6t and later embarked on a solo career. Virtuoso brothers Nicholas and Kevin Francett, and Erkki Feodoroff join L\u00e4nsman in creating a musical landscape with influences from progressive rock, jazz and grunge. Even the most surprising combinations merge easily together with L\u00e4nsman's joiku singing. With this nomination, Kaustinen Folk Music Festival honors the S\u00e1mi culture, music and traditions and acclaims the work that is being done to keep the S\u00e1mi history and tradition alive.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to G\u00e1janas, the festival programme includes <strong>Laura Cortese &amp; the Dance Cards,<\/strong> a star ensemble of American folk, and the highly skilled and charismatic <strong>Betsayda Machado &amp; La Parranda el Clavo <\/strong>from a small village in Venezuela who embark on their first visit to Europe. Quoted as a \u2019musical tornado\u2019, the action-packed <strong>Fiddlers\u2019 Bid<\/strong> from Shetland take the floor together with their equally vivacious Finnish friends, the masterly <strong>Frigg. <\/strong>Estonia's favourite party band <strong>Trad.Attack!<\/strong> starts out the celebrations for Estonia's 100 years of independence at Kaustinen. Finnish bands also flock at Kaustinen in the summer: <strong>Windstar<\/strong> is a vocal folk hop ensemble familiar already from 2013\u2019s Showcase series at Kaustinen, folk orchestra led by Niko Kumpuvaara starring <strong>Paula<\/strong> <strong>Koivuniemi, <\/strong>and Kaustinen's own, indisputable legends <strong>Folk musicians, Prusikoukku<\/strong> and the 20-year-old <strong>T\u00f6tterss\u00f6n<\/strong> in a massive joint concert. Children's programme includes Timo Parvela's <strong>Flavour and Bunny<\/strong> story concert and <strong>Satu Sopanen &amp; Tutti Orchestra<\/strong>. Master folk dancer Hannu Nipuli has put together a folk dance concert that brings alive the choreographies of the acclaimed choreographer Helvi Jukarainen. Hundreds of folk musicians will once again crowd the stages at Kaustinen, furthest guests include <strong>Thunder Bay Pelimannit<\/strong> arriving from Ontario, Canada, and <strong>Sons of America<\/strong> from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Summer 2017\u2019s Showcase series of three bands has been assembled from an abundant group of applicants. <strong>Marko Siekkinen &amp; Toivoniemi Reserve<\/strong> is a bluegrass, folk and storytelling band from the city of Oulu. <strong>Duo Systrami<\/strong> is a northern Swedish twin duo, who are seamlessly in sync throughout their music, from arrangements to performance styles. <strong>Perpetuum Locomobile<\/strong> is a modern view of world music soundscape amidst a pandemonium, drawn by highly skilled musicians.<\/p>\n<p>The eighth national <strong>Konsta Jylh\u00e4 Competition<\/strong> will be arranged at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival on 10<sup>th<\/sup> - 11<sup>th<\/sup> In 2017, the competition is aimed for small ensembles (2-4 people) and, unlike previous years, it only has one series. The music the contestants perform should be folk music, traditional or new. New music should also have a clear link to tradition. The competition is arranged by Kaustinen Pelimannitalo in collaboration with the Folk Music Institute and the winners of the contest will perform at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival.
